This sleepy chinchilla captures gentle charm with its round body and related expression, creating an irresistibly cozy little plush.

This tutorial contains how to make it step by step, starting with the head, body, an ear, a sleepy hat, a hat pompom, and two paws. When it’s all crocheted together, you can add little eyes and a nose.

Materials needed to make this pattern are weight #6 chenille yarn with grey, white, yellow, lilac, and pink shades, a 4mm crochet hook, safety eyes, a darning needle, stuffing, scissors, and stitch markers.

It’s perfect for nurseries, cozy décor, thoughtful handmade gifts, and amigurumi lovers.

Rnd 16: (2 sc, dec, 2 sc) x 6 in the BLO (30)

Begin to stuff your work. Make sure not to over stuff from round 16 onwards as this will ensure that the bottom of your chinchilla stays flat.

Rnd 17: (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24)
Rnd 18: (sc, dec, sc) x 6 (18)

Finish stuffing.

Rnd 19: (sc, dec) x 6 (12)
Rnd 20: dec x 6 (6)

Fasten off, leaving a tail. Weave end of tail through the FLO of the remaining 6 st, close hole and weave in end.

With a long strand of grey, embroider sleepy eyelids as desired.

Using another strand of pink, embroider a nose across 3 visible stitches between rounds 9-10. I did 3 layers of embroidery to create a thick nose.

Ear x1

Starting in white.

On the last st of round 3, change to grey.

Rnd 4: (sc, inc, sc) x 6 (24)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Back of Ear

Rnd 1: 6 sc into a Mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Use the tail to sew this to the back of the ear, covering the white section. Weave in you end.

With another strand of grey, sew the ear on to the right side of the chinchilla’s head (between rounds 3-6). For further reference, lest 3 visible st between the right eye and the ear.

Sleepy Hat

Starting in lilac.

Rnd 1: 5 sc into a Mr (5)
Rnd 2: inc x 5 (10)
Rnd 3-4: sc around for 2 rounds (10)
Rnd 5: (sc, inc) x 5 (15)
Rnd 6-7: sc around for 2 rounds (15)
Rnd 8: (sc, inc, sc) x 5 (20)
Rnd 9-10: sc around for 2 rounds (20)
Rnd 11: (3 sc, inc) x 5 (25)
Rnd 12-13: sc around for 2 rounds (25)
Rnd 14: (2 sc, inc, 2 sc) x 5 (30)
Rnd 15-18: sc around for 4 rounds (30)

On the last st of round 18, change to yellow.

Rnd 19-24: sc around for 6 rounds (30)

Fasten off and weave in your end. Upturn the yellow section to form the hat rim.

Stuff the pom-pom.

Rnd 7: (sc, dec) x 3, sc (7)

Fasten off and leave a tail. Weave end of tail throuht the FLO of the remaining 7 st, close hole and use the remainder of the tail to sew the pom-pom to the hat.

Cut a long length of yellow yarn and use this to sew the sleepy hat on to the side of the chinchilla’s head that does not have an ear. Fold down the hat to your desired location and sew the pom-pom against the chinchilla’s head to secure it in place.
