Amigurumi Puffer Fish Plushie Free Pattern

The Amy puffer fish is a free amigurumi crochet pattern. That’s quick, intermediate level, and full of texture.

This adorable sea creature is worked in the round using double treble crochet stitches and single crochet stitches to create a soft, bubbly surface.

With a round puffy body, little fins, a hat, and its expression, it’s the perfect stash-busting project for ocean lovers and handmade gift givers.

It’s crafted with sport-weight yarn with blue, turquoise, off-white, and purple shades, a 2mm crochet hook, safety eyes, stuffing, a tapestry needle, scissors, and some scraps of yarn in different colors for embroidery.

Body & Head

Amigurumi Puffer Fish

Start in off-white.

(Be aware that the dtr stitches pop out on the rish side of work. You can push them in the right direction when making the next sc. Make the dtr stitches more relaxed/loose and sc stitches tighter for more edefined spikes.)

Stuff the body with fiberfill and continue stuffing as you go.

Using a yarn needle, weave the yarn tail through the front loop of each remaining stitch and pull it tight to close.

Tail

Startin turquoise

ch 9. Stitches are worked around both sides of the foundation chain.

Rnd 1: start in second ch from hook, inc, 6 sc, 4 sc in last ch. Continue on the other side of the foundation chain, 6 sc, inc (20)
Rnd 2-4: (3 rounds) sc in all 20 st (20)
Rnd 5: (3 sc, dec) x 4 (16)

Change to blue, don’t cut the turquoise yarn.

Rnd 6: sc in all 16 st (16)

Change to turquoise, don’t cut the blue yarn.

Rnd 7: (2 sc, dec) x 4 (12)

Change to blue, cut the turquoise yarn.

Rnd 8-9: (2 rounds) sc in all 12 st (12)

The tail doen’t need to be stuffed. Sl st in next st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the tail between rounds 11 and 16 of the body and head.

Dorsal Fin x2

Start in turquoise.

ch 5. Stitches are wored around both sides of the foundation chain.

Rnd 1: start in second ch from hook, inc, 2 sc, 4 sc in last ch. Continue on the other side of the foundation chain, 2 sc,inc (12)
Rnd 2-3: sc in all 12 st (12)

Sl st in next st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the dorsal fins over and under the tail with an interspace of approx. 1 stitch.

Lateral Fin x2

Starting in Off-white.

Ch 7. Stitches are worked around both sides of the foundation chain.

Rnd 1: start in second ch from hook, inc, 4 sc, 4 sc in last ch. Continue on the other side of the foundation chain, 4 sc, inc (16)
Rnd 2: sc in all 16 st (16)
Rnd 3: (2sc, dec) x 4 (12)

Sl st in next st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewign. Sew the lateral fins to the sides of the body and head between rounds 18-22 with an interspace of approx. 20 stitches at the front.

Eye x2

Starting in Off-white.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in a mR (6)
Rnd 2: inc in all 6 st (12)

Sl st in next st. Fasten off and weave in the yarn end. Sew a small black bead in the centerr of the magic ring or insert a small black safety eye. As this part is vert small, recommended splitting a separate yarn tail into strands and using a single strand of off-white yarn to sew the eyes between rounds 20 and 25 of the body and head with an interspace of approx. 1 st.

Mouth

Starting in turquoise.

Ch 18 and join with a sl st to make a circle. Make sure the chain isn’t twisted. Crochet 20 sc in the circle by wrapping them around the chain and not making them into any chain spaces, sl st in first st.

Fasten off, cut the yarn, weave the end in between the stitches. As this part is small, recommended splitting a separate yarn tail into strands and using a single strand of turquoise yarn to sew the mouth between rounds 16 and 20 of the body and head.

Embroider straight stitches on the body and head and lateral fins using off-white and yellow yarns.

Hat

Stating in purple.
